No bug gets our
attention like the lowly termite. And no bug has generated more
information and misinformation than this wood-eating pest. There are
45 species of termites in the United States and probably as many
opinions on how to best control them. Most experts agree that
termites usually exist in multiple colonies that are interconnected
by underground passageways. Each colony can contain from 50,000 to
over one million insects that are divided into a strict social
organization. These colony groups can spread over an area the size
of a baseball diamond to the size of Connecticut. |

If they attack
a home, it is just one of many choices for a food source. Naturally,
many home owners are concerned about termites. They may not care
about details but they know that if something is damaging the
structure of their house, it is not good. These concerns are
compounded by the fact that the skeleton of a house is hidden, the
wood frame is usually out of sight behind a nice looking layer of
brick or rock, or siding. The good news is that with a little
knowledge, homeowners can make an intelligent choice of how to best
cope with a termite problem and in many cases, the solution is
relatively inexpensive. |
